Karen
Andersdatter Winther was born on the farm called Stounbjerggaard and in the
parish of St. Dalby. It is believed that she was probably born around 1665.
Judging from registers of ratepayers she died before 1718.
She married Jorgen Sorensen in the church of St. Dalby in 1691. As you can read
in the biography of Jorgen Sorensen she was probably a widow of a farmer in
Kleis, in the parish of Raarup. One is not able to verify this as the Raarup
parish register only starts from 1751.
From this marriage there were five children: Kirsten Jorgensdatter,
Morten Jorgensen
Winther (born about 1698), Anders Jorgensen Winther, Maren Jorgensdatter
(born about 1703) and Hans Jorgensen (died 1729).
These siblings are mentioned in a document concerning the administration of the
estate of Kirsten Jorgensdatter’s husband, who died in 1729. However, according
to the Registers of ratepayers kept in the Danish Record Office in Copenhagen it
appears that Jorgen Sorensen in Kleis only had three children. In the book about
the Gjesager Family the author explains it so that either an individual tried to
cheat the taxation authorities by telling them he/she had fewer children than
you really had, or you only included the children, who were able to work.
